Where was the most common place a WW2 Tank was hit by a round.?
What was the most common place a WW2 Tank was taken out, was it the Tracks or Turret, side/upper hull, rear or other. I was just curious as a lot of late WW2 Tanks and early post WW2 Tanks have thicker turret armor compared to frontal armor (Centurion tank and Sentinel Tank come to mind). I suppose it depends on the Tank/Tank Destroyer's gun that is firing and the vehicle it's up against. Cheers John
Hull front (lower nose and glacis) were the most common parts of the tank to be hit (I have statistics on this somewhere). Not coincidentally these tended to be the places on the tank with the best armor protection. Turret front and then turret sides would be next.
Turret armor got progressively thicker on late-war tanks because it had to be - turret fronts were usually vertical or near vertical, while the nose and glacis plate were often well sloped. To compensate for the poor ballistic shape the turret armor had to be thicker to provide the same level of protection. A Panther for example could be penetrated at much greater range with a hit on the turret front than it could with a hit on the hull front. There are reliable reports of the American 76mm M1 gun firing HVAP for example penetrating a Panther turret front at 1,600 yards but the hull front was difficult to reliably penetrate at 200 yards.
The "small" turret on the too-late-to-see action Panther II was no accident but a direct result of this experience. The German's made the turret smaller (less of a target), changed the mantlet design to improve protection over the front then took advantage of the reduced weight of the smaller to increase the armor thickness.
