Archbishop Mitty rolls past Chico and into NorCal DII finals (mercurynews)
Aaron Gordon did all the things expected of a dominant high school big man
Tuesday in Archbishop Mitty's 85-59 win at home over Chico in the California
Interscholastic Federation Northern regional Division II semifinals.
The 6-foot-8 junior scored 29 points -- four on dunks -- pulled down 10
rebounds and blocked six shots. But that's not all he did. Mitty coach Tim
Kennedy utilized Gordon's excellent agility and lateral mobility by putting
him on Chico's leading scorer, 6-2 Jesse Holmes, who came in averaging over 17
points per game.
Holmes tried to employ the conventional strategy: Put the ball on the floor
and make the bigger player try to keep up with the quicker, smaller player.
The problem in this case was that Gordon appeared just as mobile. After one
first-half sequence in which Gordon blocked successive shots on penetration
attempts by Holmes, the Panthers realized it might be a good idea to look for
other scoring options.
"By the time I come out of high school I want to be as well-rounded as
possible,'' Gordon said. "I like to dribble and distribute. I like to post up.
