What You Should Know Before Buying RC Helicopters by michael russell
If you are looking for a fun and exciting way to spend your free time, RC helicopters are the way to go. Who doesn't like flying, or rather, the next best thing? Who doesn't want to impress friends and family with interesting or complex aerial acrobatics? Just wait right there though, because not all of these mini-choppers are created equal, so few words to the wise before go out and dump money on something that doesn't quite suit you just yet.
So you are new to the hobby, or buying for someone who is. Do you remember how much crashing was done with RC racecars? That was only on 2 directions of movement. With an RCH (RC heli) you have movement in all directions, so the likelihood of a crash is greater. So, what you need to do is fine a durable RCH for you, or that friend getting into the hobby. Something else you should ask yourself with your first purchase is exactly how much control you would like over the RCH. Keep in mind, the more control you have, the more complex the Remote Control itself will be, and this can be determined by looking at the number of channels present. Channels come in the 2, 3, 4 and 6channel variety, with each channel adding and additional control at your fingertips.
2channel: up and down control as well as rotation (the direction it's facing). To move forward, the heli needs to be balanced in the air (not rotating). Please see X-Type Infrared 2ch Mini RC Helicopter as example.
With the 3-channel control, you bring in control of forward momentum. Rather than having to balance the heli and stop all rotation, you simply press forward to make it go forward. Of course, it is recommended you do have some balance so that you can keep control of the thing, and prevent a crash. Even the most durable toy will break if thrown against a wall enough, after all. Adding a fourth channel to the mix let you control side-to-side movement. Your facing will stay the same, you will just move left or right in relation to the current orientation. This is also called 'crabbing' if you needed a visual.
The 6 channel RCH is the most complex of the controls. With the sixth channel, you will gain control of the main rotor pitch. To put it in simpler terms, it allows for full three-dimensional movement. Up, down, forwards, backward, side-to-side, and even diagonal movement is now possible. There is a fifth channel, but it is often unused. A good example of a 6ch model is the ESky Belt CP 6 Channel Electric Helicopter.
Do you want a model that is ready to fly (rtf) or almost ready to fly (ARF: requires some assembly)? What about durability or controls? All these affect the price, so look carefully. The more you want of each, the more it will cost, ranging from 35 dollars to around 300 dollars. Building your own is always an option, but until you are familiar with RCH's we recommend getting a boxed model.
Multiple channels for control, high durability, no assembly (rtf: ready to fly) or limited assembly (arf: almost ready to fly). All of these factors will affect your price, and with the more options you have, the higher it will go, ranging from 35 dollars to around 300 dollars. So, make your decision carefully.
