Boeing will offer 777 successor with decision as early as 2012 (Arlington Heights Daily Herald)
Boeing Co. will brief its board by year-end or early 2013 on plans to offer a
successor to its bestselling wide-body 777, as it seeks to to challenge Airbus
SAS's A350-1000, the president of the airplane unit said."There's not a
question of whether we'll do something, it's just a question of when," Boeing
Commercial head Jim Albaugh said in a interview in Geneva today at a
conference on aviation and the environment.Boeing hasn't yet decided fully on
the configuration of the plane, which would enter service toward the end of
the decade. The company is considering a new wing as well as a next-
generation engine to succeed the GE90 built by General Electric Co. that
powers its 777-300 models, he said.Boeing is putting together a group of
airlines to determine what the plane might look like, and also assessing the
size of the non-recurring development costs, Albaugh said. How the company
moves forward depends on what customers want as well as what Airbus's
A350-1000 "is or isn't," he said.Airbus is developing the A350 model to
compete against Boeing's 787 and 777 jets. The first A350, called the
